SpiceJet, an Indian airline, being investigated after extreme turbulence injured passengers.

Following an incident in which a plane’s autopilot failed, causing significant turbulence and several onboard injuries, the Indian low-cost airline SpiceJet is under investigation by the government. The country’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is investigating what happened on SpiceJet flight 945 on May 1, which flew from Mumbai to Durgapur, West Bengal. According to CNN station News18, the B737-800 airliner’s autopilot failed for two minutes in the middle of the trip, forcing the crew to fly the plane manually until it recovered.

As a result of the turbulence, some overhead bins opened, goods spilled all over the cabin, and emergency oxygen masks fell. After the plane arrived at Durgapur’s Kazi Nazrul Islam Airport, fifteen persons were taken to the hospital: 12 passengers and three crewmembers (RDP).

“When the plane hit turbulence, the seat belt sign illuminated. The pilots and crew made many announcements telling passengers to remain seated and buckle their safety belts. Few passengers were injured because of the strong turbulence “SpiceJet’s spokeswoman told CNN in a statement.

The DGCA acted quickly in response to the situation. The plane has been halted in Kolkata for inspection. Additionally, the agency placed many crewmembers on leave from the flight, as well as the Durgapur Aviation Medical Examiner (AME), who authorized the plane to leave following the event. “The problem is being handled with the utmost seriousness and deftness,” tweeted Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia. Scindia as “unfortunate” described passengers’ suffering. Two of the passengers, one with a brain injury and the other with a spinal injury, are still in critical condition, according to News18.

“SpiceJet regrets this regrettable event and is providing all medical assistance to the injured,” said the spokeswoman.
